Who is Eligible for Medical Cannabis?
Medical cannabis is a treatment option that more people in the UK are now exploring. But who is eligible, and what are the requirements?

The Key Requirement: Trying Conventional Treatments First
To be considered for a medical cannabis prescription in the UK, you need to have tried at least two conventional treatments for your condition. These might include medications prescribed by your GP or specialist, or other recognised therapies. If those treatments have not worked well for you, or caused unwanted side effects, you may be eligible to try medical cannabis.
Conditions That May Qualify
Unlike some treatments that are limited to specific illnesses, any condition can be considered for medical cannabis if conventional treatments have not been effective. This includes:
-
Chronic pain
-
Neurological conditions
-
Gastrointestinal issues
-
Psychiatric conditions
-
Many other long-term or treatment-resistant conditions
Every case is reviewed individually by our specialist doctors.
When Medical Cannabis May Not Be Suitable
While many people are eligible, there are some situations where medical cannabis may not be appropriate, such as:
-
A history of schizophrenia or psychosis
-
Certain serious heart conditions
These do not always rule out treatment completely, but they are important factors our doctors take into account for your safety.
What Should You Do Next?
The best way to find out if you’re eligible is to complete our patient questionnaire and request your summary of care record from your GP practice. This gives our medical team the information they need to review your case and advise you on whether medical cannabis may be a safe and suitable option for you.
